  • Began his career with ICI in 1969. In 1994 appointed Chief Executive of Zeneca Pharmaceuticals and in 1999 he became Chief Executive of AstraZeneca plc, a position he held until retiring at the end of 2005.
  • Board Member of Laboratorios Almirall SA, UCB SA, Evolva Holding SA, and Theravectys SAS.
  • Until 2009 he was the Chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland and a Non-Executive Director of BP.
  • Also served as Senior Non-Executive Director of Lloyds TSB Group and a Non-Executive Director of Amersham International.
  • Currently President of the Science Council and has received many scholarly awards, fellowships and honorary degrees.
